Ten new Strategic Health Authorities were established in July 2006 to lead the local NHS areas identified as a result of "Commissioning a Patient-led NHS".

NHS London is responsible for ensuring that the capital's health services deliver world-class care by:

- developing and implementing a strategy for health and healthcare in London

- holding local organisations to account for the quality of the care which they provide

- ensuring capacity through the development of the workforce, technology and buildings.

Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) provide primary and community health services and also commission hospital services (from us) for the population they serve.  Our main PCTs are Barnet and Enfield

We provide hospital services for more than half a million people in Barnet, Enfield and parts of southern Hertfordshire

You can find the key national documents that govern the way the NHS is organised at the Department of Health website - http://www.dh.gov.uk/ - look in the publications section.
