Toolkit
As a key part of the Information Governance agenda, the Department of Health and the NHS Connecting for Health jointly produced an Information Governance Toolkit. This web-based tool was launched in late 2003, and currently represents Department of Health policy as at 1st July 2009.
The Toolkit has been made available to assist organisations achieve the aims of Information Governance, and currently encompasses:
- Information Governance Management
- The Confidentiality NHS Code of Practice
- Data Protection Act 1998
- Information Security
- Information Quality
- Records Management
- Freedom of Information Act 2000
The toolkit covers these areas as a set of six initiatives:
- Information Governance Management – Framework of processes and groups who ensure compliance
- Confidentiality and Data Protection Assurance - Confidentiality NHS Code of Practice, Caldicott Principles & Data protection Act 1998
- Information Security Assurance – keeping person identifiable data safe, control of access to it
- Clinical Information Assurance - Health Records Management, NHS Code of Practice
- Secondary Use Assurance - Data Quality, audit, clinical coding
- Corporate Information Assurance – Corporate Records Management, FOI
- The Toolkit also contains specific organisational views. It is the tool by which organisations can assess their compliance with current legislation, standards and national guidance.
