Major or Critical Incident Stress debrief
Following a Major or Critical Incident a counselling service is provided by the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service. It can be accessed either through self-referral or line management referral by contacting the Occupational Health department on 020 8375 1137.
A member of staff will normally receive a 1x50 minute assessment session. If it is demonstrably in the interests of the member of staff, further counselling sessions may be provided by the counsellor, usually up to 5x50 minute sessions per annum including the initial assessment session.
The principles underpinning this service are that the service will be fully accessible. The service must however seek to avoid creating dependency on the part of individual clients. At the initial assessment the maximum number of sessions provided (10) must be made clear to the member of staff. In very exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to continue with the sessions.
The counsellor will respond to staff needs following major incidents or untoward incidents where it may be beneficial to have group de-briefing/support sessions as and when needed.
