haemoglobinopathy testing is
complicated by there still being
two laboratory computer
systems in use in the Barnet &
Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust.
The testing of
haeamoglobinopathies has been
centralised at the Barnet site but
the reporting is still performed
on the computer system of the
receiving laboratory. At Barnet
the long term storage of
haemoglobinopathy screening
results are stored on the main
laboratory computer and
therefore are processed by the
electronic links in the same way
as any other haematology
result.
At Chase Farm the
haemoglobinopathy results are
stored on a stand-alone
computer system which is
interfaced to the laboratory
computer. The
haemoglobinopathy results are
issued from this standalone
computer and not passed back
to the laboratory computer and
therefore are not sent out
electronically by the laboratory
computer. For technical reasons
if the haemoglobinopathy
results were to be entered on
the laboratory at Chase Farm
the full blood counts which are
normally submitted at the same
time on the same sample would
be delayed by a couple of
weeks.
