Olympic torch lights up hearts on Kingfisher Ward

Staff and young patients on Kingfisher Ward in Chase Farm Hospital received a special visit from a man carrying one of the most famous objects in the world right now, and certainly one bigger than the person he had come to see.

Edward Woods had run with the Olympic torch in Bishops Stortford during early July, but his sister was unable to come and see him because she was with her son Stanley - Edward’s nephew – whilst he was being cared for on Kingfisher Ward. Stanley wasn’t due to be born until a few days later, but was actually born around four months prematurely and has been looked after in a number of local hospitals since, including both Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital. 

To ensure his family didn’t get to miss out on one of the country’s most historic occasions, Edward instead brought the same torch he ran with to Kingfisher Ward, giving his young nephew a photo that he will treasure forever and putting a huge grin on the faces of everyone on the Ward at the time. Jill de Graag, Play Specialist on the Ward, said: “We’re very grateful to Edward for bringing the Olympic buzz right into our workplace, and wish young Stanley all the best for the future.”
