Turning facial hair into a fundraiser!

The Therapy Department at Barnet Hospital are supporting Movember, a fun charity event held around the world every November where guys compete to grow the most impressive 'mo' (the Australian slang for moustache) to raise funds and awareness about male health issues.

The challenge began on the 1st of Movember.  The male therapists participating - known as Mo Bros - registered with a clean shaven face and will spend the remainder of the month growing and grooming their moustaches into prize assets whilst raising as much money and awareness about prostate cancer as possible.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck and Ian Botham look-a-likes battle it out on the catwalk for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title.  While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (ladies who support their guys or just love Mo's!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés.

John Matthews, a Physiotherapist at Barnet Hospital, explains why he is taking part; "Which ever way we look at it, men are far less healthy than women.  The average life expectancy for men is five years less than for women.  Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face.  There is an attitude that they have to be tough and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or go for regular medical checks.  The aim of Movember is to change this attitude, make men's health fun by putting moustaches back on the face of men and in the process raise some money!"

Last year over 6,000 Mo Bros and Sistas raised over £1 million for The Prostate Cancer Charity.

Every year about 35,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 10,000 men die from of the disease. A British man has a 1 in 11 lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer. They aim to provide hope for tomorrow through the research that they fund - and practical support for today through their extensive - and growing information services. All funds raised by Movember in the UK stay in the UK and go directly to The Prostate Cancer Charity.
