Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Departments (also known as Accident and Emergency or A&E) at Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital are open 24 hours a day and treat patients who need urgent medical attention and treatment. Patients access these services either by their own means, by GP referral or, if the condition warrants it, by ambulance.

The Emergency Departments provide a full range of emergency and urgent care that cannot be dealt with by a GP and is staffed by skilled medical, nursing and practitioner staff.

The Emergency Departments at Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital are both designated as trauma units as part of the London wide Trauma Network, and deal with all but the major trauma cases who are transferred by ambulance to the Main Acute Trauma Unit for North Central London. Likewise Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) patients are transferred to the Hyper Acute Stroke Units within London prior to returning once stabilised. Both departments can refer to the TIA service at Barnet Hospital for same week day assessment or referred to the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at weekends.
